HWSFD Participates in Lewis Mills High School Mock Car Crash

Members of the Harwinton West Side Volunteer Fire Department recently participated in the Mock Car Crash event held at Lewis Mills High School. During the demonstration, HWSFD members assisted with the emergency response portion of the scenario and participated in the extrication of one of the “patients” from the vehicle.

The mock car crash is an important event that gives students a realistic look at the serious consequences that can come from unsafe decisions behind the wheel. With prom, graduation, and summer activities approaching, this demonstration serves as a powerful reminder that one poor

decision can change many lives forever.

Emergency responders see firsthand how quickly a normal day can turn into a tragedy. Distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding, and choosing to ride with someone who should not be behind the wheel can all have devastating consequences. The goal of the mock car crash is not to scare students, but to help them understand the responsibility that comes with driving and the importance of making safe choices.

HWSFD was proud to take part in this event alongside other emergency services and community partners. These demonstrations help show students what happens after a crash, including the response from police, fire, EMS, and other agencies. More importantly, they give students a chance to think about their choices before they are ever placed in a dangerous situation.

As prom season approaches, we encourage all students to look out for themselves and each other. Make a plan before going out, never drive impaired, never get into a vehicle with an impaired driver, avoid distractions, wear your seatbelt, and speak up if something does not feel safe.

The Harwinton West Side Volunteer Fire Department remains committed to protecting and educating our community. We thank Lewis Mills High School and everyone involved for helping deliver such an important message to our students.

Make good decisions. Look out for your friends. Get home safe.
