What Does HWSFD Respond To?

When many people think of the fire department, they often think of structure fires. While fire response is an important part of what we do, the Harwinton West Side Volunteer Fire Department responds to many different types of emergencies and public service calls throughout the year.

Our members may be called to respond to structure fires, chimney fires, brush fires, motor vehicle accidents, EMS first responder calls, storm-related emergencies, wires down, hazardous conditions, fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, mutual aid requests, and other situations where assistance is needed. Every call is different, and each one requires teamwork, training, communication, and a commitment to safety.

HWSFD works closely with Litchfield County Dispatch, Harwinton EMS, town officials, and neighboring fire departments to help ensure emergencies are handled in a coordinated and professional manner. Depending on the type of call, our members may be responsible for fire suppression, scene safety, traffic control, patient assistance, equipment operation, water supply, or support for other responding agencies.

A large part of emergency response happens before the call ever comes in. Members train regularly, inspect equipment, check apparatus, and prepare for a wide range of possible incidents. This preparation helps make sure that when the tones go out, HWSFD is ready to respond.

Whether the call is large or small, our goal remains the same: to provide dependable, professional, and compassionate service to the residents and visitors of Harwinton.
